Padma Bridge

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, also referred to as the Padma Bridge or just the Padma Bridge (Bengali: , romanized: Pôdma Bôhumukh Setu), is a two-level road-rail bridge that spans Bangladesh's Padma River, the largest distributary of the Ganges. [4] [5] The less developed southwest of the nation is linked to the northern and eastern regions by this route, which runs between Shariatpur and Madaripur. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the bridge on June 25, 2022. [2]

The steel truss bridge, which carries a single track railroad on the lower level and a four-lane roadway on the upper level, is regarded as the most difficult building project ever undertaken in Bangladesh.

[6] The bridge is made up of 41 sections, each of which is 22.5 m (150.12 ft) long (74 ft)

History

According to Daily Purbadesh, in 1971, a Japanese team of surveyors sent a feasibility study to East Pakistan for the construction of the Dhaka-Faridpur route (now Bangladesh). They proposed constructing a bridge over the Padma river as part of the road's construction. [12] The first president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, announced after the country was liberated that a bridge would be built over the Padma River, however due to his passing, the plan was never carried out. [13]

In order to promote direct contact between the capital and the south and southwest, a project for Tk 3,843.50 crore was suggested on September 18 for the construction of a bridge on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga-Khulna Highway that crosses the Padma River.

[22] The work is being done by the China Major Bridge Engineering Corporation (MBEC), which was chosen to work on the main bridge. There are 42 pillars in all on the bridge. There are six heaps beneath each. The pillars were covered with steel spans. There are 41 spans in all on the bridge.
